Rare Antique (c.1850) Chinese Hediao Carved Dog Pendant
This rare and collectable antique pendant dates from around 1850 and is Chinese in origin. The ancient and skilled art of hand carving nuts and fruit stones is known as Hediao and subjects would typically include animals, Chinese zodiac signs, legendary figures or Buddha. This particular example appears to have been carved from a peach stone and features a dog with its tail in its mouth. The eyes are set with garnet cabochons (either natural or paste). The gold coloured wire bale has an attached 9ct gold suspension ring.
The pendant measures 2.2cms height (excluding the bale and suspension ring) and it weighs 1.5g
There are no hallmarks; the top suspension ring tests as 9ct yellow gold, the gold wire collar has not been tested and could be gold / gold plated / gold coloured metal.
This antique pendant is around 170 years old and is in very good condition for its age, with no damage and showing just very light signs of age / general wear. The peach stone is a natural material and shows some natural texture variation. The top suspension ring has not been soldered closed.
