Antique Victorian (1879) 9ct Gold, Almandine Garnet and Pearl Locket Back Ring

£195.00
sold out

This beautiful, decorative, antique ring is made of fully hallmarked 9ct yellow gold and dates from 1879. The ring front is set with five almandine garnets and six seed pearls and the shoulders have pretty scrolling detail. The reverse of the ring front houses a concealed locket compartment which appears to have a fabric backing under the circular glass cover.

The ring is a UK size J / between a US size 4.5 - 5

The ring front measures approximately 9mm maximum height and weighs 1.8g

The inside of the ring shank is stamped ‘9’ and ‘375’ for 9ct gold, along with hallmarks showing that it was made in Birmingham in 1879.

This ring is 144 years old and is in very good condition for its age, showing just light signs of age / general wear. The garnets and pearls are in good condition and are secure in their settings; on close inspection it can be seen that a few of the setting claws are absent or shorter than the others. The central almandine garnet is set at a slight angle. There are no dents to the gold. There is evidence of a historic re-sizing of the ring on the side of the shank (see photos for detail). The hallmarks are all nice and clear. The glass to the locket compartment is in great condition, there appears to be a small piece of fabric or paper under part of the glass but I haven’t tried to remove the cover.
