Antique Art Nouveau Emile Dropsy Silver Brooch
This beautiful antique Art Nouveau brooch dates from around 1890 - 1910 and is made of solid silver, with a lightly gilded finish. The brooch depicts a lady holding Irises and is by Emile Dropsy (and signed ‘E Dropsy’ on one edge).
Jean Baptiste Emile Dropsy was born on the 21st May 1848, the son of famed French marble sculptor Jean Baptise Dropsy. Preferring to go by his middle name, Emile, which is noted in his artworks, Dropsy inherited his ancestors’ talent for sculpture but wanted to break away from the family trade into metal work. This saw him seek an apprentice in Paris with Lemoine, a renowned metal engraver and sculptor. Over his career, Dropsy honed his talent, focusing on nature and religion in his finely sculpted medallions.
The brooch has a diameter of 2.3cms and it weighs 4.0g
There are some foreign, unreadable, hallmarks on the clasp and the brooch tests as silver.
