Unusual Antique Victorian 9ct Gold Glazed Book Locket Pendant

£47.00
sold out

This sweet and unusual antique locket pendant dates from the Victorian era and is made of 9ct yellow gold. The locket is in the form of an opening book, with a different engraved pattern on the front and back. Inside there are two locket compartments: one compartment is empty and the other contains a lock of hair with a fitted glass cover. This is possibly an item of mourning jewellery. I’m not sure if it’s possible to remove the compartment containing the hair (or to remove the hair).

This locket is of the ‘9ct back and front’ variety, which means that the front and back covers of the locket are made of 9ct gold and the frame and inner compartments are a gold coloured metal (which improves the locket’s strength and durability).

The ‘book’ measures 1.9cms x 1.5cms (excluding the bale and suspension ring).

As is sometimes the case with jewellery of this age and type there are no hallmarks, but the locket has been professionally tested and is made of 9ct gold ‘back and front’. The suspension ring also tests as 9ct gold.

This antique locket is around 140 years old and shows signs of being worn and loved. The front and back of the locket are in good condition showing just light signs of age / general wear. The central section of the hinge shows some discolouration. There is some discolouration to the gold on the inside of one half of the locket (I have only lightly cleaned it). The glass has a couple of small scratches but is otherwise fine. The locket opens easily and closes securely with a click. The suspension ring is fully closed. This locket is priced to reflect condition.
